Merino in the heat: is Merino wool good for summer?

Is Merino wool good for summer? Does Merino keep you cool as well as hot? So curious of you!

Is Merino wool good for summer? First off, yes. Second, you're not the first to ask the question, and you won't be the last. It's common knowledge that wool is for winter: cosy sweaters, mountain base layers, mid-layers that keep you toasty on cold chairlifts. But lucky for you (and for the thousands of lightweight Merino tees sitting on our shelves), it's not only for winter. It's actually a super technical fibre that regulates temperatures in both directions, working just as hard to keep you cool as it does to keep you warm.

The reality is, Merino sheep live on mountainsides through baking summers and brutal winters, and there's no getting changed between seasons. Their wool has evolved to manage both extremes, because it had to. We just put it in our t-shirts.

Cotton soaks up sweat and stays wet. Synthetics trap heat and start smelling by lunchtime. Merino breathes, wicks moisture, and naturally resists odour. So that's the pitch, read on for the proof.

How Merino regulates temperature in heat

Does Merino wool keep you cool? Absolutely. Merino fibres are naturally crimped, creating tiny pockets of air within the fabric. Those pockets do double duty: in the cold, they trap warmth. In the heat, they let air move and help your body release excess heat before it becomes a problem. It's the same fibre doing two different jobs, because the sheep it came from didn't just exist in one climate.

A four-year study led by NC State University and The Woolmark Company has now proved what sheep and riders have known forever: Merino wool outperforms polyester in moisture buffering by 96%, cotton by 45%, and viscose by 26%. That's lab-tested, peer-reviewed science, and it's the reason we keep coming back to this fibre summer after summer.

Test participants experienced better thermal comfort in wool garments, with less after-chill, which is the temperature drop that happens when athletes stop moving and their sweat cools against their skin. Wool also did a better job holding a steady microclimate against the skin as humidity and temperature shifted mid-activity. Wool was the only fibre that kept participants comfortable across the whole session, not just during the active phase.

Is Merino wool moisture-wicking?

Yessir. Merino is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture before it feels wet. It pulls sweat away from your skin and holds it within the fibre itself, then releases it into the air as vapour. Your skin stays drier for longer, and the fabric dries fast once you're out of the sun. Forget your cottons that get wet and stay wet - Merino manages moisture like nobody's business.

Is Merino wool breathable?

Very. Merino is one of the most naturally breathable fibres. And it goes hand in hand with the fact that it can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in water, then releases it back into the world instead of trapping it next to your skin. That process has a cooling effect - similar to how sweat cools you when it evaporates off your skin. The result? Your Merino tee doesn't stick to your skin, trap heat or keep you clammy the way synthetics tend to once you start sweating. It breathes. Merino is an active, genuinely responsive fibre, adjusting as your body temperature shifts, which means it works with you whether you're grinding up a climb or lounging by the lake with a cold one.

Merino vs cotton in summer

Cotton is all fun and games until it absorbs sweat. Then holds sweat. Then stays damp against your skin the whole way home. That dampness is what makes a hot day feel unbearable: it's not just the heat, it's the sweaty fabric clinging to you.

Merino absorbs moisture too, but instead of trapping it against your skin, it releases it into the world. You stay drier, the fabric dries faster, and you're not peeling a soggy t-shirt off yourself at the end of the day. Same job, completely different result.

Merino vs synthetic in summer: odour and heat

The industry has spent a long time in labs creating synthetics that wick moisture. And some do it well - the part that loses most people is the smell. Polyester and nylon are happy hunting grounds for the bacteria that cause body odour, and once that bacteria sets in, it's hard to wash out for good.

Merino is naturally odour-resistant. And anyone who's switched to Merino will be the first to tell you, it matters. And it makes a big difference when you're sweating in the sun, hiking for three days, or just value close conversations with your friends, mid-adventure.

How does it work? Because Merino manages moisture so well, it keeps your skin drier, which gives odour-causing bacteria a less hospitable environment to begin with. On top of that, the fibre structure binds and traps odour molecules within it until washing, rather than letting them build up on the surface. For you, that means fewer washes, longer wear between them, and a t-shirt that doesn't smell like a locker room after a day in the heat.
